Hispanic Summer Program to Benefit From $1.8 Million Lilly Endowment Grant
Grant Will Support Programming and Infrastructure

New York, NY: The Hispanic Summer Program, an organization founded in 1989 to educate Latinx seminarians and graduate students of religion, announced that it will receive support from a $1.8 million grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc. The grant to Union Theological Seminary will support HSP’s programming and infrastructure over a three-year period and help HSP become an even more sustainable and central conversation partner in North American Theological and Higher Education.

This grant comes after months of interviewing organizational stakeholders, assessing the needs of the Latinx theological community, and developing a programmatic and institutional vision. New efforts to strengthen educational offerings for Latinx seminarians and graduate students of religion will;

  • Expand the very successful Latinx Discernment, Calling, and Vocation Workshop;
  • Expand the scope and offerings of the Through Hispanic Eyes program;
  • Enhance pedagogical training for Latinx faculty who teach at the Hispanic Summer Program;
  • Hold regional workshops for Latinx seminarians and graduate students on issues affecting the Latinx community in the United States;
  • Create programs for developing administrative skills among Latinx faculty and clergy;
  • Establish development initiatives for fiscal sustainability beyond the life of the Lilly Endowment Grant;
  • For the first time in the organization’s 30+ year history, hire full time staff who will oversee this expansion.

The Rev. Dr. Daisy L. Machado, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Hispanic Summer Program, said “The receipt of this grant for the Hispanic Summer Program will mean a new opportunity to expand the programming that has become core to our work and mission. This grant will facilitate new ventures and new opportunities to serve a wider demographic and also to make the HSP an even more valuable partner to our sponsoring schools and the wider ATS community. We look forward to the next three years of work as we move into a new decade of collaboration and leadership done latinamente.”

About the Hispanic Summer Program: Founded in 1989, the Hispanic Summer Program seeks to supplement and enrich the theological and ministerial education being offered in ATS seminaries and universities with academic courses and other programs directly addressing Latinx history, ministry, and theology. In our 30+ year history, the HSP has taught over 1,800 seminarians and graduate students of religion, provided training for over 150 non-Latinx faculty and administrators, and contributed to the development of countless Latinx clergy, community organizers, and faculty.
