The HSP Exchange
This initiative emerged in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, a global health crisis that in the United States has disproportionately affected Brown and Black communities. As we spoke with members of the HSP community—students, faculty, alumni—it became clear that people were craving ways to connect with individuals outside of their network, tools for ministering to their own Latinx communities, and resources for critically engaging the pressing realities of our time. Responding to these needs, the HSP Exchange was born.
This program was intentionally called the Exchange in reference to its vision and mission: to provide a space to exchange information, tools, resources, prayers, and support with one another. The Exchange is a site of intellectual inquiry, practical edification, and community building. In short, the Exchange is an opportunity to reflect on doing theology latinamente within the complex world we inhabit.
Since the program started, the Exchange has invited multiple thought leaders to center our conversation. The inaugural program, held on March 31, 2021 (the eve of Maundy Thursday), welcomed Dr. Cláudio Carvalhaes of Union Theological Seminary to discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic requires a distinct liturgical response for Brown and Black communities who have been disproportionately affected by the global crisis. Nearly a hundred people joined our initial Exchange with many more watching Dr. Carvalhaes’ remarks after the event was held. Since then we’ve welcomed hundreds more to our Exchange events with topics ranging from Lainas and the Bible to Islam and Latinidad. We are excited for all the other Exchanges that are to come.
